October Garden day

Hi all:

Hope you'll be able to join us in the garden this Saturday morning for some group labor (and food!).   The landscape is clearly shifting, I could hear the endless falling of brittle elm leaves during harvest on the river today.  The meat chickens are gone from the lower garden and the air carries fall smells.  So come out and see for yourself.  A variety of digging and cleaning up tasks, come prepared clothing/gloves-wise.

We're thinking of contributing chili, using the last of our 2010 ground pork.
cheers,
Flip

*we know it's peak weekend, which will involve a bunch of students.

custom APPLE pressing at the barn

pickin'
Hello.
Do you know that we're regularly making cider at the barn? Some of the apples are ours (from the Dutchess tree that folks had a chance to eat in their shares a couple weeks back), and others are brought to us.  You or anyone you know can bring us apples to be made into cider.
Here's how it works:
* 2 bushel minimum, the press can handle up to 5 bu at a time
* no $ exchanged, we just split the fresh cider
*bring a container for your share of the juice (average is 1-2 gal. cider/bushel apples)
* you are NOT required to be part of the pressing, though you're welcome to
* we will press 1-2 times weekly 'til the apple supply dwindles
*you can pick from wild trees, your neighbors, or buy from a local orchard
*mixing multiple varieties is ok, and beneficial often flavor wise.

Besides fresh drinking, the juice may also be canned, frozen or fermented into hard cider or vinegar.
Spread the word.
As always, thank you.

wanna go to a hops fest!?

HELLO!
Bob, Ken and I are heading down to the 16th annual Madison County Hops Fest this weekend.  It's in Oneida, smack dab between Syracuse and Utica.  We're leaving Saturday morning around 8:30a.  There's vendors, hops demos, live rootstock etc...,  also a chance to sample over area 30 craft brews.  Hopefully we'll get a chance to see a grower's hop yard down there before heading back around 4p.  I don't think there's any other hop fests on this coast, so it's pretty cool that we're relatively close.  Admission is free, then there's cost for the 2 different optional tastings.

We have space for 4 more people, and another car can tag on if there's enough interest.
What do you think??

'and it all came from here'

potatoes of many shades
Before this past Saturday gets lost in a string of busy days, we'd like to recognize the 21 adults/ 4 children and all that was accomplished.
Despite the warm temps and high humidity we managed to combine our energies to:
*dig 600 pounds of potatoes
*clip 500 bulbs of garlic
* thin a couple hundred row feet of fall roots and greens
Although some had to get on with their day, those who stayed shared in a lovely potluck lunch.  Cristian and Grace were happy to say their dish came completely from the farm.

We're hoping more of you will be able to attend the October 1st garden day with a post harvest celebration potluck.

be well,
bob
